Mother dies after jumping in front of three children to save them from being hit by a car

A Texas mother has been killed after she jumped in front of three children, including two of her own, and saved them from being hit by a car on the first day of school.

Family identified the woman as Kharisma Ashlee James and was a two-time combat veteran and a nurse.

James was hit after an elderly man, who was picking up his grandchildren, accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the breaks on his car at Tippin Elementary School around 3.15pm on Monday.

James jumped in front of her two kids and another seven-year-old to try and protect them from getting hit. She died at the scene.

The three children were hospitalized with various injuries.

Authorities erected a small black barrier to block the site of the body in the parking lot. A damaged red car could be seen next to it.

The elderly man was taken into police custody on Monday evening.

It remains unknown if he will be charged.

An investigation has been launched by the El Paso ISD Police Department and the El Paso Police Special Traffic Investigations Unit.

Classes will continue as normal on Tuesday and counselors will be available on campus, the district announced.

'On a day that began with such hope and excitement, it is with tremendous sadness that I confirm the tragic loss of one our parents today,' Superintendent Juan Cabrera said in a statement.

'This is a day you never anticipate and are never prepared for. In times such as these, we are grateful for our community support and will lean on each other for strength.'

'We continue to pray for our students and the families involved.'
